Key Policy Points

Core Policies for Foreign Students and Expats Working in China (2026): Read Before Job Hunting

Work restrictions for international students

International students holding X1/X2 visas are generally prohibited from engaging in paid employment within China.

Basis:Law on the Administration of Exit and Entry of Foreigners / Provisions on the Employment of Foreigners in China

Add-on for International Student Internships

With your school's approval, you may apply to the Exit-Entry Administration of the Public Security Bureau for a residence permit endorsement for "internship" before participating in paid internships.

Basis:Joint Regulations by the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Education

Stay in China to Work After Graduation

Employment requires a work permit and a residence permit for work purposes after graduation. You may apply for a Z visa to enter the country for employment.

Basis:Provisions on the Administration of Employment of Foreigners in China

Work Permit Categories

Class A (Highly Talented)/Class B (Professional)/Class C (General Staff) – Points-Based System

Basis:"Foreign Talent Work Classification Standards for China" issued by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs

Special policies for the Free Trade Zone

Hainan Free Trade Port, Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone, and the Greater Bay Area offer relaxed policies for foreign talent. Hainan allows foreign university graduates to work and intern directly.

Basis:Special Policies for Hainan, Shanghai, and the Greater Bay Area

Important Legal Notice

International students holding study visas (X1/X2) are, in principle, prohibited from engaging in paid employment within China. Any paid internship must be approved by the student's institution and accompanied by a visa endorsement for "internship" issued by the local Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry Administration. Failure to comply constitutes illegal employment and may result in fines, detention, or deportation. When E3 Trip recommends jobs to international students, it must provide clear compliance guidance to prevent misleading them.
